According to a recent report by Adobe, this year’s Black Friday sales has set a new record, surpassing the 3 billion dollars mark for the first time with 3.34 billion dollars in sales. This year’s sale also broke the record of mobile shopping with over 1 billion dollars on Black Friday. The following Cyber Monday also did extremely well with mobile accounting to 38 percent of 3.36 billion dollars in sales.

 

So why has mobile shopping become such a large part of our life? Tina Spooner, chief information officer at IMRG, claims that “We increasingly use our smartphones for managing so much of our lives – it’s only logical that completing purchases on retail sites would gravitate over to these devices as well.” This has been a growing trend for some time now but a new development that has increased the shift toward mobile is the appearance of larger screens on smartphones, a movement that started because of the growing popularity of video. The rise in mobile popularity might be  an inevitable change if you consider this in addition to the improvements made to retail websites, making them more responsive and easier to use.

 

When smartphones emerged, people would look to their mobiles for information and complete the purchase on a desktop, tablet or in stores but today the whole shopping process has moved to one device with smartphones driving twice as many sales as tablets at the last Cyber Monday. This interesting fact might suggest that mobile shopping is killing retail stores, but it’s quite the opposite if you consider quality over quantity. The searches for “near me” has doubled during the last year because most shoppers are multi channel and use their mobiles even when they go to the store, looking for information and finding the best local deals. Foot traffic might be down, but the value of every visit has gone way up with customers reading reviews on their phones while they’re in the store.
